With the current state of world affairs, it’s not just the common cold or flu we’ve got to worry about at the moment. No, COVID19 has made its mark and it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.

That being said, there are ways in which we can reduce our chances of falling ill this season, and it doesn’t just mean staying locked indoors and avoiding all people (unless you are currently in self-isolation for recovery).

Yes, people I’m talking about boosting our immune systems. Eating right, getting enough sleep, stressing less – all of these boost it.

So too do these antiviral and antibacterial essential oils:

  • Eucalyptus – antiviral & especially good for respiratory illnesses
  • Manuka – antibacterial & antibiotic – considered an immunity tonic to boost your immune system
  • Orange – antibacterial – good for respiratory illnesses as they increase bronchial secretion (getting the bad stuff out of your lungs!)
  • Black pepper – antibacterial – particularly good for infections & viruses
  • Peppermint – antiviral  & especially good for respiratory illnesses
  • Tea Tree – antiviral & antibacterial – good for infectious illnesses
  • Thyme – antibacterial – good for infectious diseases

How to use these antiviral & antibacterial essential oils…

Now, just because you recognise the names of these essential oils doesn’t mean you should be using them in place of their counterparts! For example, eating an orange will always be better for you than ingesting orange essential oil.

Why? Because the concentration of essential oils is SO HIGH that even 3 drops can cause long-term irreparable damage to your oesophagus (no matter what big MLM companies tell you – I’m telling you this as a certified aromatherapist. We don’t subscribe to ingesting essential oils. Nor do doctors or dieticians. There’s a reason for it).

However, what you CAN do is add 3 drops of any of these oils to a room diffuser, in a bath, or over a steam bowl for you to breath in. OR, you can mix a few drops into an oil like coconut oil and rub it into your skin (this is the most effective method for absorbing essential oils as they go directly into your bloodstream and straight to work).

If you don’t have these essential oils to hand, don’t worry. Eating their food counterparts will be just as good for you and your immune system in the long run! It will just take slightly longer to move through your digestion system and into your bloodstream than using essential oils on the skin.

But every little bit helps!
