Why lavender is an overrated essential oil

I’m just going to go ahead and say it. I think lavender is overrated! Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to healing burns there isn’t another essential oil I would go to. But when it comes to just deep relaxation, I kind of feel like lavender has had its day.

As an aromatherapist, here are my TOP 10 favourite oils when it comes to actually feeling calm and relaxed.

1 – Frankincense

Known as the essential oil that is conducive to meditation and prayer, this essential oil will take you into a DEEP state of calm, almost in an out-of-body experience way. So small doses, ‘cause this one is POWERFUL. (No wonder they gave it to Jesus).

2 – Melissa

My love affair with Melissa only began a couple of months ago, but it’s incredible if you want to banish melancholy and revive your spirit. Just be careful that you are getting pure melissa and not a combo with lemon, lemongrass or citronella.

3 – Basil

Known as one of the best nerve tonics, this little beauty does wonders at calming your nervous system! Clears the mind, brings clarity and relieves intellectual fatigue. Shouldn’t be used during pregnancy though.

4 – Bergamot

Ah Bergamot…my love for you is eternal. If you’re looking for a calming essential oil that has a bit more depth and isn’t’ so floral, this is the one I would go for.

5 – Cypress

Think wind flowing through the leaves…and you have cypress. In fact, it’s still used by the Tibeatens as a purification incense. Perfect for calming and resetting.

6 – Clary Sage

Speaking of purification, make way for clary sage. Can’t be used at all during pregnancy, unless you are trying to bring on labour. But it’s known in all circles as having the ability to restore everything (and everyone) to their natural equilibrium.

7 – Neroli

Given that Neroli can be used to treat insomnia, is it any wonder it’s on my list for calming & relaxing essential oils? Also, as an added booster it’s an aphrodisiac. Trust me on that one.

8 – Sandalwood

Another one like Bergamot, Sandalwood is nice if you prefer that deeper, earthier tone. Really good for grounding, so if that’s what you’re looking for – this is the oil I would pick.

9 – Ylang Ylang

Known best for its ability to soothe frustration and anger, I love Ylang Ylang. Something about the smell alone sets me off to sleep. Its calming properties can’t be ignored.

10 – Jasmine

Probably the oil I would most associate with lavender (personally). Still, it can’t be denied that Jasmine has been known to “produce a feeling of optimism, confidence and euphoria”. Especially useful for those who are feeling indifferent or idle.

There you have it – my top 10! So next time you reach for the lavender bath salts, oil or scented candle, remember there are other essential oils out there that just might (definitely – if you were to ask me) be a better fit for your needs.
